Abakaliki - The Ebonyi State Government has flagged off the second batch of beneficiaries of its Overseas Scholarship Scheme, reaffirming its commitment to human capital development and youth empowerment.
The official flag-off ceremony took place on Monday at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Ezza, where the Governor sent off the scholars embarking on academic programmes in the United Kingdom.
Speaking at the event, the Governor described the moment as more than a routine travel exercise, noting that it symbolised a deliberate investment in the future of Ebonyi State. He said the beneficiaries represent the state’s belief that sustainable development is best achieved by investing in people, particularly the youth.
According to him, the scholarship programme, fully funded by the Ebonyi State Government, aligns with the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs Agenda, which prioritises education and capacity building despite prevailing economic pressures.
“No society can rise above the quality of its people. This is why we made a conscious decision to invest in human capital,” the Governor said.
He reminded the scholars that they would serve as ambassadors of Ebonyi State abroad, urging them to uphold values of discipline, integrity, hard work, and excellence. He added that the funds committed to the programme represent a collective sacrifice by the people of the state, expressing confidence that the beneficiaries would justify the trust reposed in them.
The Governor commended the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board for ensuring transparency in the selection process and for maintaining consistent monitoring of beneficiaries.
He also disclosed that scholars from the first batch are currently excelling in reputable universities in the United Kingdom and Canada, with several on course to graduate with distinctions.
Releasing the new batch, the Governor offered prayers and words of encouragement, urging them to return home after their studies to contribute meaningfully to the development of Ebonyi State.
“Go and make Ebonyi proud. Go and excel. Return home equipped to help us build a stronger and more prosperous state,” he said.
