Over 59 Killed in Separate Attacks Across Four Nigerian States
At least 59 people lost their lives in a series of violent incidents across Borno, Kano, Kebbi, and Plateau states between Friday and Saturday.
In Kebbi State, 30 people were reportedly killed in coordinated bandit attacks across Tadurga in Zuru Local Government Area and Kyebu in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area. The state government described the killings as deeply tragic and unacceptable.
Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida led a condolence delegation to the affected communities, assuring residents that the government would bolster security efforts and seal off illegal entry points exploited by criminals. He also announced a relief package of N50 million—N25 million each for the two communities—to support victims' families and rebuild infrastructure.
Twelve people traveling to a wedding in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State were ambushed and killed in Mangun village, Mangu LGA, on Friday night. The victims, passengers in an 18-seater bus from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, had stopped to ask for directions when they were attacked by angry youths who reportedly mistook them for enemies.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants brutally attacked the victims, killing 12, injuring 12 others, and setting their vehicle on fire with bodies inside. Troops from Operation Lafiyan Jama’a rescued survivors, many of whom are receiving medical attention.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 22 suspects. Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina has launched an investigation into the attack.
In Borno State, a female suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in a busy fish market in Konduga Local Government Area on Friday night, killing 12 people.
According to the Borno State Police, the bomber infiltrated a crowded section of the market around 9:30 p.m. before detonating the explosive. Local sources said the attacker was burnt beyond recognition, and injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital. The deceased were buried on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites.
In Kano State, a suspected military mortar bomb explosion killed five people and injured ten others on Saturday. The blast occurred along the Eastern Bypass in the state capital.
Kano State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori confirmed the incident, noting that the explosive device may have originated from a military truck coming from Yobe State. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause and full impact of the explosion.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, condemned the killings and urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. He described the attacks as tragic, barbaric, and a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges across the country.
