There are dreams people nurture for years that never come to pass, while there are others that unfold with such striking precision that they appear divinely orchestrated. In politics and leadership, certain moments arrive that seem destined long before they become reality.
Such moments are often tied to individuals whose personality, goodwill, competence, and destiny naturally position them for greater responsibility.
In Enugu State’s political landscape, Ikeje Asogwa has gradually become one of those rare personalities whose name resonates beyond politics into governance, philanthropy, leadership, and social influence.
Over the years, he has built a reputation rooted in service, accessibility, loyalty, and capacity; qualities that continue to distinguish him in both public and private life.
I did not know Ikeje personally from the beginning, although I had heard a great deal about him, his generosity, and his leadership capacity. Our paths eventually crossed towards the twilight of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration.
While I served as Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Ikeje was Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB). Most times, our encounters were casual whenever he came around the Lion Building to see our principal.
There was a period his office embarked on the recruitment of primary school teachers. When I got information about the exercise, I decided to try my luck on behalf of some persons seeking employment opportunities.
Late in the night, I put a call across to Ikeje to ask for assistance.
Despite not having my number saved, he picked up the call. After I introduced myself, he quickly recognized my identity and voice.
He asked, “Any problem?”
I replied that there was no problem but that I had some people looking for employment as primary school teachers. Calmly, he told me it was already late, but asked me to send their details and assured me he would see what he could do.
I immediately forwarded the details.
And, to the glory of God, the rest became history.
Those individuals were eventually employed, and until today, they remain grateful and appreciative of that life-changing opportunity.
After we left the government, I ventured into the wine and spirits business alongside media consultancy. It was during this period that our elder brother, Dr. Barth Ezugwu formally introduced me and my products to Ikeje at his residence in Zoo Estate.
He warmly welcomed me, encouraged me, and immediately began patronizing my products and services. From that point, I gradually became part of activities at the ground zero in his residence. The closer I got to him, the more I came to understand the kind of man he truly is.
Beyond being focused and hardworking, Ikeje is a man who believes strongly in results. He is both a strategic planner and an effective executor.
Regardless of the circumstances, he keeps his eyes firmly on the goal. Failure and excuses have no place in his personal dictionary. He dislikes unnecessary complaints but admires productivity and measurable outcomes.
Despite sometimes appearing stern in countenance, Ikeje is humble, approachable, amiable, and accommodating. He is a cheerful personality who hardly keeps malice or grudges. He expresses his thoughts openly and honestly without minding whose ox is gored. He is always categorical and unequivocal in his speeches and decisions.
He does not mince words, neither does he talk excessively. To him, action speaks louder than rhetoric.
One remarkable thing about him is that he does not make empty promises or deceive people with unrealistic expectations. He is a committed humanist and a philanthropist par excellence who, in most cases, operates without unnecessary protocol.
His environment is always filled with friends, associates, and beneficiaries of his goodwill.
More importantly, Ikeje knows his friends and never pretends about those relationships. Long before I became close to him, I had read, heard, and witnessed countless testimonies about his generosity and humanitarian disposition.
However, getting close to him gave me firsthand experience of those testimonies. I have personally experienced, felt, and benefited immensely from his kindness and support, and I continue to benefit from it.
Without exaggeration, Ikeje is a permanently good man.
Sometime in the middle of last year, I had a dream in which Ikeje was chosen by the party leadership and Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to contest the Enugu North Senatorial seat against the then-incumbent, now late Senator Okey Ezea, in 2027.
At that time, Senator Ezea was neither ill nor was there any indication of his impending death.
Later that same evening, I drove to Ikeje’s residence. He was seated alone by the poolside at the ground zero, relaxing with cool music after his routine evening exercise. I joined him and was served my preferred drink and refreshments.
As we conversed, I disclosed the dream I had concerning his senatorial journey.
He dismissed it casually and told me he was not interested, adding that I should wait until the appropriate time came.
I responded by telling him that I rarely dream, but whenever I do, such dreams often materialize.
Then came the painful and heartbreaking reality.
Before the end of last year, my good friend, Senator Okey Ezea, sadly passed away. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
His sudden demise created a vacuum in Enugu North Senatorial Zone, triggering political interests and consultations among many aspirants seeking to occupy the position.
However, it has become evident that since Ikeje declared interest in representing Enugu North Senatorial Zone in the Senate, there has been an unprecedented wave of endorsements, commendations, support, and goodwill cutting across party lines, social classes, communities, and political interests within and outside Enugu State.
That overwhelming acceptance is not accidental. It is a direct reflection of the personality, credibility, and character of Ikeje Asogwa. The endorsements speak eloquently of a man whose public and private life has been defined by excellence, loyalty, performance, and humanity.
Indeed, he is a leader worthy of support and close attention.
With Ikeje, the dream of a better Enugu North Senatorial Zone appears not only possible but achievable. His emergence has rekindled hope among the people for purposeful representation, inclusive leadership, and balanced development.
As he assured stakeholders during the unveiling of his campaign council at the recent Enugu North Senatorial Zone stakeholders and leaders’ meeting, his victory will usher in a new era where quality representation, inclusiveness, and even development will remain sacrosanct priorities.
And because he is widely known as a man whose word is his bond, the people believe him.
That confidence and trust are expected to translate into massive support at the polls, as the people of Enugu North look forward to electing a senator capable of delivering the quality representation they have long yearned and clamoured for.
Sometimes, history unfolds in ways that remind humanity that destiny can not be hidden forever. What begins as a quiet dream can gradually evolve into a collective reality embraced by an entire people.
For many across the Enugu North Senatorial Zone, Ikeje Asogwa represents more than a political aspiration. He represents hope, continuity, trust, and the possibility of a new beginning.
And perhaps, just perhaps, the dream has only begun to unfold.
