A day meant to be filled with joy turned into a tragedy on Saturday morning when Superintendent Mustapha Garba Gumau, a senior police officer, lost his life in a fatal car accident less than an hour before his wedding ceremony.
The devastating incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. along the Gumau-Magama Gumau road in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
SP Gumau, the groom-to-be, was en route his wedding venue when the vehicle carrying him and three companions collided head-on with another car.
Confirming the tragedy, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, stated that the officer and two others were pronounced dead at the Toro General Hospital.
“The Command is mourning,” Wakil said. “SP Mustapha Garba was on his way to attend his own wedding when the unfortunate incident occurred.”
According to the police report, the officer was traveling in a Mercedes-Benz with friends when the driver lost control near Bargan Tsamiya and veered into the path of an oncoming Opel Vectra, resulting in a deadly crash.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Sani-Omolori, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. The remains of the deceased have since been released for burial.
Just hours before the accident, SP Mustapha had shared a cheerful post on Facebook, expressing excitement for his wedding day—unaware it would be his last.
Since the news broke, an outpouring of tributes has flooded social media, mourning the loss of the officer and honoring his memory.
