Nigeria’s Super Eagles booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a dominant 2–0 victory over Algeria on Friday at the Stade de Marrakech.
The win sets up a last-four encounter with hosts Morocco, who earlier defeated Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.
Nigeria came into the match in fine form following a 4–0 demolition of Mozambique in the Round of 16 and maintained their attacking momentum against an Algerian side that had been unbeaten in the tournament and conceded just one goal prior to the quarter-final.
From the opening minutes, the Super Eagles dictated the tempo, enjoying greater possession and pressing high up the pitch. Victor Osimhen spearheaded the attack, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi marshalled the midfield effectively.
The first half saw Nigeria create several clear chances, with Akor Adams missing a one-on-one opportunity and another effort cleared off the line. Algeria remained compact defensively and relied on counter-attacks, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane producing key saves to keep the scoreline level at the break.
Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock in the second half when Osimhen rose highest to power home a header. The Super Eagles continued to dominate proceedings, and Akor Adams doubled the lead after being set up by Osimhen.
Wilfred Ndidi anchored the midfield with authority, breaking up Algerian advances, while Nigeria’s wide players stretched the defence to maintain attacking pressure. Algeria’s substitutions failed to change the course of the game as Nigeria saw out the contest with composure.
The Super Eagles now turn their attention to a highly anticipated semi-final showdown against Morocco.
