The Lagos State Government has introduced a new initiative tagged “Trash for Cash”, encouraging residents to earn money by exchanging recyclable waste materials for cash rewards — a move aimed at promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos.

Announcing the programme on Monday via his official X handle, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the initiative, driven by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), is part of the state’s broader environmental agenda to reduce pollution and improve recycling habits.

“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our LAWMA Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!” Wahab wrote. “We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city!”

According to Wahab, the sensitisation drive has already begun across communities, with LAWMA officials educating residents on how to separate recyclable items and benefit financially from proper waste management.

In a related statement, LAWMA reaffirmed the commissioner’s message, noting its ongoing community engagement and awareness efforts. “Residents and shop owners in Agege (Sango Ward) were sensitised on proper waste management and prompt bill payments. Keeping Lagos clean starts with each of us  proper disposal, sorting, and zero roadside dumping,” the agency stated on its official X handle.

LAWMA added that its field officers and recycling partners are currently active in several local government areas, guiding residents on how to identify and segregate recyclable materials for collection.

The “Trash for Cash” programme is expected to empower households economically while tackling indiscriminate waste disposal - a major environmental challenge in the state.

Officials say the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of positioning Lagos as Africa’s cleanest and most sustainable megacity, combining environmental responsibility with citizen empowerment.
