Casablanca, Morocco. January 17, 2026. The Super Eagles of Nigeria clinched third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after edging out Egypt in a tense penalty shootout following a goalless draw at the Stade Mohammed V on Saturday.
The third-place play-off encounter ended 0–0 after regulation time and extra time, with neither side able to convert their chances in a closely contested affair. Nigeria, however, showed greater composure from the penalty spot, winning the shootout 4–2 to claim the bronze medal.
Both teams approached the match cautiously, resulting in limited clear-cut opportunities throughout the 120 minutes. Egypt enjoyed spells of possession, while Nigeria threatened intermittently on the counter, but solid defensive performances ensured the deadlock remained unbroken.
The fixture renewed one of Africa’s most storied football rivalries, with both nations aiming to end their AFCON campaigns on a positive note after semifinal exits. Nigeria’s victory further extended their strong record in third-place matches at the tournament.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, played a decisive role during the shootout, making crucial saves as the Super Eagles converted four of their penalties, while Egypt managed only two successful attempts.
The result confirms Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish in Africa Cup of Nations history, underscoring their consistency on the continental stage. Egypt, meanwhile, will reflect on a campaign that failed to meet expectations despite moments of promise.
Both teams are expected to shift focus to upcoming international fixtures and domestic commitments following the conclusion of the tournament.
