Thousands of aspirants seeking to contest the 2027 elections on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress are expected to know their fate today as the party releases the outcome of its screening exercise.
Among those awaiting clearance are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking re-election, and Osifo Stanley, the only aspirant challenging him for the party’s presidential ticket.
The screening process, which took place between May 8 and May 12, involved nearly 3,000 aspirants contesting for presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly positions.
Several prominent politicians were screened, including Hope Uzodimma, Benjamin Kalu, Gbenga Daniel and Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.
Concern has reportedly emerged within the party over Uzodimma’s ambition to contest for the Imo West senatorial seat while still serving as governor until January 2028, a development some party leaders fear could spark political complications.
In Ogun State, a fierce contest is brewing over the Ogun East senatorial ticket between Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator Gbenga Daniel.
Daniel insisted he was ready for a direct primary election, expressing confidence that he would defeat Abiodun if party members were allowed to vote freely. He also accused some forces within the party of plotting to intimidate members and suppress participation in the primaries.
Despite this, APC stakeholders in Ogun East endorsed Governor Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the senatorial race, describing the decision as one aimed at preserving party unity and strengthening representation in the district.
Daniel’s camp, however, dismissed the endorsement, describing it as an attempt to impose a candidate on party members.
Meanwhile, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda has warned aspirants and supporters against violence, anti-party conduct and actions capable of disrupting the primary elections, stressing that offenders would face disciplinary measures.
