Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has admitted that his future with the Nigerian national team remains uncertain following their semi-final defeat to hosts Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Rabat.

Nigeria’s campaign was halted on Wednesday after a goalless draw over 120 minutes ended in a 4–2 penalty shootout loss to Morocco. The Super Eagles will now battle Egypt in the third-place match scheduled for Saturday.

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle was forthright about his position beyond the tournament, noting that his fate lies in the hands of the football authorities.

“I don’t know my future now,” Chelle said. “I am the coach of Nigeria, but maybe in two days my president will tell me it is finished, or maybe that I should continue. I really don’t know.”

Despite the painful exit, the Franco-Malian tactician expressed pride in his players’ performances, insisting that Nigeria ranked among the strongest teams at the competition.

He urged his squad to turn their disappointment into motivation ahead of the final match against Egypt.

“I will analyse this game and our AFCON campaign,” Chelle added. “We still have one game against Egypt. I am proud of my players, even though I am disappointed for them, because in truth, we were maybe the best team in this AFCON. We must respond positively.”

Chelle stressed that discussions about his contract should be deferred until the tournament is fully concluded, emphasising the need for total focus on the remaining fixture.

“This is not the time to question my situation,” he said. “The AFCON is not over. We must concentrate on the last game and make sure we win.”
