The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun a two-week nationwide warning strike following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government.

Announcing the development at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the industrial action takes effect from midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025.

Piwuna explained that the strike became necessary to compel the government to fulfil its outstanding agreements with the union and to tackle lingering issues confronting Nigeria’s public universities.

He recalled that the union had on September 28, 2025, given the government a 14-day notice to address long-standing demands, but said all efforts at dialogue failed to produce meaningful outcomes.

“Consequently, all ASUU branches are directed to withdraw their services from 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, in line with the decision of the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna declared.
