A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has said that the outcome of the 2027 general elections will be determined by the will of Nigerians, not by the advantage of incumbency.
Ajadi made the assertion while reacting to reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allegedly claimed that no opposition could unseat him in the 2027 presidential election.
According to him, any suggestion that election outcomes are predetermined poses a threat to public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.
“Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on the constitutional right of citizens to freely choose their leaders through the ballot, irrespective of who is in power,” Ajadi said. “The true strength of our democracy lies in the power of the electorate.”
The PDP chieftain, who has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election, noted that political developments in Nigeria and other African countries have shown that leadership can change when citizens actively participate in the electoral process.
He called on Nigerians, especially youths and first-time voters, to take part in civic responsibilities such as voter registration, peaceful mobilisation and active participation in elections.
“Democracy flourishes when citizens believe in and effectively utilise the instruments provided by the constitution,” he added.
Ajadi further stressed that elections remain the most legitimate means of holding leaders accountable, particularly in view of prevailing economic challenges, security concerns and the rising cost of living. He noted that holding public office does not automatically guarantee electoral success, as performance and public trust are decisive factors.
Reiterating the PDP’s commitment to peaceful political competition, Ajadi urged increased civic engagement and strict adherence to democratic values as political activities intensify ahead of 2027.
He concluded that Nigeria’s future leadership will ultimately be shaped through lawful, peaceful and participatory democratic processes.
