Enugu, Nigeria – July 21, 2025

In a landmark move set to bring relief to thousands of electricity consumers in Enugu State, the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, cutting rates from ₦209/kWh to ₦160/kWh, effective August 1, 2025.

The Commission also announced a freeze on tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E, ensuring that most consumers across the state will not experience any increase in their electricity bills.

The new tariff structure follows a rigorous review of costs and operations by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the new utility company that succeeded Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The review was guided by the Commission's Tariff Methodology Regulations 2024, which emphasized fairness, transparency, and cost reflectivity, taking into account the federal government’s subsidy on power generation.

EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo highlighted that the downward review was made possible by the ongoing subsidy from the federal government, which currently absorbs a large portion of the actual cost of electricity production.

“It is only right that Ndi Enugu, Band A customers, enjoy the reduced tariff starting August 1, 2025,” said Okonkwo. “We have ensured the tariff is cost-reflective, fair, and does not burden the state financially.”

In addition to the price reduction, the Commission has rolled out robust monitoring and accountability measures to guarantee consumers receive reliable power. MainPower is now required to publish daily supply data and is subject to automatic feeder downgrades if it fails to meet service standards.

This development is a direct result of the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, enacted under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, which grants the state full regulatory authority over its electricity market, following Nigeria’s landmark constitutional and legal reforms in 2023.

The Commission described the tariff adjustment as a “win for the people, the market, and the future of energy in Enugu.”

By ensuring fair pricing and stronger oversight, EERC’s latest move marks a major step toward reliable, affordable, and accountable electricity service delivery for all Enugu residents.
