The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.
The strike, which took effect on Monday, June 1, 2026, is aimed at mounting pressure on relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the NUT Oyo State Wing, Hassan Fatai, and the Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils has created widespread fear among educators and weakened confidence in the state's education system.
The union lamented that the situation has not only unsettled teachers but has also discouraged many parents from sending their children to school, thereby increasing anxiety within affected communities.
According to the NUT, the industrial action is intended to draw urgent government attention to the security challenges facing schools and the need for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted victims.
The union called on teachers across the state to comply fully with the directive while remaining peaceful and ensuring their personal safety during the period of the strike.
It also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils and their families, assuring them of its continued engagement with relevant authorities until the victims regain their freedom.
The NUT reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety and security of teachers and learners, stressing that safeguarding school communities remains a priority.
