Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has reaffirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a viable and influential political platform despite its lingering internal challenges and recent wave of defections.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Saraki dismissed suggestions that the opposition party has lost its relevance, arguing that such views are largely shaped by disagreements among political elites rather than the reality within grassroots structures.
He noted that while public discourse in Abuja may be dominated by internal disputes among party leaders, the PDP continues to command loyalty across various states and communities. According to him, engagements at the grassroots level reveal a party that still enjoys recognition and support among ordinary Nigerians.
Drawing from his experience in Kwara State, the former governor said feedback from party stakeholders indicates that many members remain committed to the PDP, which he described as a familiar and trusted political brand across the country.
Saraki also addressed concerns surrounding the party’s internal processes, particularly the convention held in Ibadan. He explained that although he had reservations about the exercise, he allowed participation by delegates from Kwara after receiving assurances that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be present to oversee proceedings. However, he expressed disappointment that the electoral body did not attend, maintaining that adherence to due process is critical to strengthening internal democracy.
Amid speculations about possible political realignment, Saraki dismissed claims that he was considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other platform. He reiterated his commitment to the PDP, clarifying that his relatively low public profile in recent times is linked to his decision not to contest in forthcoming elections rather than any withdrawal from party activities.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he called for a more inclusive approach to leadership selection within the party. He suggested that zoning the presidential ticket to the South, alongside allocating the national chairman position to the North-Central region, could help foster balance and unity.
The PDP has continued to grapple with internal divisions since the 2023 general elections, including leadership disputes, institutional disagreements, and the exit of several high-profile members. The party’s leadership structure has remained unsettled following the suspension of former chairman Iyorchia Ayu, with Umar Damagum currently serving in an acting capacity. Differences between key organs of the party, as well as ongoing tensions involving influential blocs, have further complicated its internal dynamics.
In addition, defections by some governors and federal lawmakers have affected the party’s political strength in certain regions, raising concerns about its competitiveness ahead of future elections.
Despite these challenges, Saraki expressed confidence that the PDP can regain stability if ongoing issues are effectively addressed. He also stressed the broader importance of maintaining a strong opposition, warning that a weakened multiparty system could pose risks to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Meanwhile, a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory recently issued a bench warrant for Kabiru Tanimu Turaki over allegations of providing false information to the police. Turaki has challenged the order, describing it as unjust, and the matter has been adjourned to April 22, 2026, for further proceedings.
