Former Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed made the declaration on Tuesday at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
His announcement comes barely a week after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, announced his exit from the Labour Party to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Addressing party members and supporters, Baba-Ahmed stressed that his decision to seek the presidency was not influenced by Obi’s recent political move. He explained that his ambition was long-standing and predated the 2023 general election.
“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I am not following anyone’s trajectory or stepping into anyone’s shoes,” he said.
He further noted that he had expressed interest in the presidency even before Obi declared his own ambition in 2023, adding that records were available to substantiate his claim.
“Before His Excellency, Governor Peter Obi, filed for the presidency, I had already aspired to the office. The records are there for all to see,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
