Tragedy has been reported in Kano State following the death of a mother of five, Aishatu Umar, after an alleged case of medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, a government-owned health facility.

A relative of the deceased, Abubakar Mohammed, said Aishatu died after suffering months of severe abdominal pain following a surgical procedure carried out at the hospital in September 2025.

According to Mohammed, Aishatu began experiencing persistent and worsening pain shortly after the surgery. Despite making several visits to the hospital, she was reportedly treated with pain-relief medication without further medical investigation.

He explained that scans conducted only a few days ago allegedly revealed that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the initial operation.

“She underwent surgery in September and complained of severe abdominal pain for months. Each time she went back to the hospital, she was given painkillers,” Mohammed said. “It was only two days ago that scans were carried out, and doctors discovered that scissors had been forgotten inside her body. Another surgery was planned, but she died before it could be performed.”

Describing the incident as gross negligence, Mohammed called on the Kano State Government and relevant health authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for the deceased.

Reacting to the allegation, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board said it had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Aishatu’s death.

In a statement issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, impartial and professional.

The board pledged that the matter would not be swept aside and that appropriate action would be taken if negligence is established.

The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger accountability and improved patient safety standards in public healthcare facilities across Kano State.
