Abuja - Isyaka Rabe, son of the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, has disputed the Katsina State Government’s claim that his father died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

Speaking in an interview with Deutsche Welle, Isyaka maintained that his father had no known history of either illness. He suggested that the retired army officer may have suffered a heart attack, while noting that some observers have speculated about a possible snake bite based on a video released by the kidnappers. However, he emphasized that the true cause of death remains known only to God.

The late general, a former Nigerian Army spokesman, was abducted alongside his wife on May 30. A week later, the kidnappers released a video demanding the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations in exchange for the couple’s freedom.

Isyaka also revealed that his mother remains in captivity, dismissing social media reports claiming she had been freed. He stated that the family had received his father’s remains but had not been informed about the circumstances under which the body was recovered.

Describing his father as a devout, peace-loving, and humble man, Isyaka said the retired military officer “died a hero.”

The Katsina State Government confirmed the general’s death on Saturday, describing it as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation. President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences, while the Defence Headquarters pledged to intensify efforts against banditry and other criminal activities across the country.

The development has renewed concerns over insecurity in northern Nigeria and the safety of citizens held captive by armed groups.
