Mohammed Kasim of PDP Emerges Gwagwalada Chairman in 2026 FCT Poll

Mohammed Kasim, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election conducted during the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council polls.

The Returning Officer for Gwagwalada, Philip Akpen, announced the results in the early hours of Sunday, revealing that Kasim secured 22,165 votes, defeating Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 17,788 votes.

According to Akpen, the election was peaceful and well-organised, and Kasim, having fulfilled all legal requirements, was duly declared elected. Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 1,687 votes.

The poll, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), took place across the six FCT area councils - Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali - covering both chairmanship and councillorship contests.

In Gwagwalada, 207,577 voters were registered, while 46,294 were accredited to vote. A total of 43,960 votes were declared valid, with 1,521 rejected ballots.

A detailed breakdown shows PDP with 22,165 votes, APC 17,788, APGA 1,687, ADC 1,366, SDP 432, NNPP 175, YPP 158, AA 116, ADP 128, APM 24, and Party A 151 votes.
