Given the impending 2027 governorship election in Enugu State, it would be imperative to engage in a serious conversation about who can provide purposeful and people-centred leadership. Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani, widely known as ODERA, presents a compelling mix of humanitarian service, business enterprise and grassroots engagement to this dialogue. These are not just traits in a political resume, but experiences that help to establish a leadership philosophy based on compassion, initiative and results. At a time when Ndi Enugu are demanding actions from the government in order to justify the faith they have in its promises, the Enugu electorate should pay more attention to ODERA's leadership’s ideals.
Among the defining characteristics of ODERA's public outreach is his connection with ordinary people and his concern for the challenges they face. His commitment to community affairs, and interventions in social needs demonstrate a philosophy where leadership starts with “where it is needed,” i.e. the people it aims to serve. Be it a family's healthcare costs, a student's education or the employment/pay potential of the young and able, the willingness to respond is what counts. Enugu requires a governor that understands that, indeed, development is about the welfare of people and not only about projects, statistics or political statements. Such a people-first approach can be constructed on the grassroots foundation of ODERA.
When families can't afford to pay for healthcare, it becomes one of the most pressing challenges for society to collectively show they care, especially in a place where families struggle to meet up with the cost of treatment. ODERA’s reported humanitarian works include support towards paying medical bills at the National Orthopaedics Hospital, Enugu and Parklane and ESUT Teaching Hospital. Among his charitable works, the reported ₦14.5 million intervention in the National Orthopaedic Hospital is significant. These interventions have a very practical direct concern to the realities of those in rough times. The challenge as governor would be to make that concern become reality in the strengthening of public healthcare provision, better access to treatment, and more support for vulnerable citizens. His humanitarian history is a solid foundation on which to build on that ambition.
Looking to the future, ODERA’s reported educational assistance to students from Nkanu communities, also reflects an investment in the next generation. This includes providing support to students studying in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Enugu State University of Science and Technology, which underscores the need to break down the financial barriers to education for youth. This concern is especially applicable to a state looking to increase opportunities and foster human capital. Enugu requires leadership that positions Education as an investment into productivity, innovation and social mobility. A government driven by that principle would seek to remove obstacles to learning, improve the effectiveness of technical and vocational education, TVE, and make a link between youth and skills, employment and enterprise.
In addition to humanitarian intervention, ODERA's business talents are another motivator for the serious consideration of his leadership potential. His reported investment in large scale fish farming reflects his understanding and appreciation for productive enterprise and the economic opportunities within the state. Agriculture and aquaculture can serve as a driver of local food production, employment, small businesses and build regional supply chains. An environment where private investment can grow and the citizens who need to be able to generate sustainable livelihoods can do so requires more than just a government development agenda for Enugu. ODERA’s experience in business brings a valuable insight into enterprise, enterprise resource mobilisation and the critical role of ideas being converted to productive activity. When directed appropriately, that experience could link to a development plan that will encourage investment, help the local producers, and increase job creation.
It is important to note the relationship between these experiences. Humanitarian service fills the need now; education opens doors for youth development, and business enterprise provides opportunities for creating a future economic value. As a group, they represent a leadership model that is compassionate but also forward-looking and socially aware with practical action. All these are important when it comes to public service with good intentions; you need to also have what it takes to mobilise your people, allocate resources and deliver results. The foundation is a foundation that could now be developed by ODERA setting forth with a clear vision of its governance that can see his community interventions becoming programmes that can touch people in all parts of Enugu State.
An Enugu that faces the challenges of its future in 2027 will have to build on what it has and address the force of demand of employment, healthcare, education, infrastructure, agricultural development and responsible public finance. The calls for action will drive a governor who can relate to communities, spur productive investment, set priorities and ensure results for public investment. With his active involvement in the community and the humanitarian work he has done, as well as business experience, ODERA has a good foundation for making that argument. His governance and leadership agenda must include unwavering transparency, action-based policies, realistic outcomes and frequent reporting to the citizens. Through localizing the problem of everyday people and putting their voice further up the centre of power, he has the ability to help drive a development agenda that will see better functioning of public institutions and a greater opportunity shared amongst more than just the elites.
Ultimately, Enugu needs a leadership that recognizes political office as an opportunity to enhance life. Chief Samson Chukwu has created a global profile of humanitarian intervention, enterprise and community engagement. These are experiences that will set a solid base for the conversation ahead. Now, the time has come to turn those strengths into a bold, inclusive and accountable visionary plan for the state. Those who think that the "next phase" of Enugu's development story should be populated by compassion, enterprise and government that produces results should strongly back his candidacy. For Enugu 2027, ODERA represents a compelling case for people-centred governance that puts the people first and measures success by the difference it makes in their lives.
