Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, renowned for his memorable role as Ahanna in the classic Nigerian film Rattlesnake, has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness.

His family announced his death in a statement published on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, expressing grief over the loss and appealing for prayers and understanding from fans and well-wishers.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.

The announcement has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where Duru was widely recognised for his contributions to Nollywood over several decades.

Duru rose to prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed film directed by the late Amaka Igwe. His performance helped establish him as one of the familiar faces of Nigerian cinema, earning him recognition among audiences across generations.

Throughout his career, the actor featured in numerous film productions, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the Nigerian film industry. His work also earned him professional recognition, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

His death comes months after he publicly dismissed social media reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness. In June 2026, Duru described the reports as false and misleading, reassuring fans at the time that he was doing well.

The family’s announcement, however, did not disclose the nature of the illness that preceded his death.

Duru’s passing represents another loss to Nollywood, an industry whose growth has been shaped by veteran performers who helped build its reputation and expand its audience over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. Funeral arrangements had not been announced in the reports available at the time of publication.

May his soul rest in peace.
