President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive affects ministers, heads of government agencies, presidential aides, and other political office holders seeking elective positions.

According to a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), the decision aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.

The circular, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, specified that the resignation order applies to:

  • Ministers and Ministers of State
  • Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, and Special Assistants
  • Personal Assistants to the President
  • Directors-General and Chief Executive Officers of federal agencies, commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies.

The directive also covers any other political appointees seeking nomination for elective offices.

President Tinubu said the measure is necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws, promote transparency, and create a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.

He emphasized that early resignation would prevent the misuse of public office and resources during party primaries.

The OSGF, through its Head of Information and Public Relations, instructed all affected officials to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the March 31 deadline.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
