Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has been honoured by the Nigerian Legion with the Best Governor in the World award in recognition of his commitment to good governance and
unwavering support for military ex-servicemen and the fallen heroes project.

The award was restated during the official unveiling and launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Governor Mbah extolled the sacrifices of Nigeria’s ex-servicemen and fallen heroes who laid down their lives to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and democracy. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the governor emphasized the need to move beyond annual symbolism and donations to a more structured and sustainable welfare framework for members of the Nigerian Legion.

“It is important that we express to you how we feel about your selfless sacrifices that secured our democracy, strengthen our unity, and protect our integrity. On behalf of the people of Enugu State, we are deeply grateful,” the governor said.

He urged the leadership of the Nigerian Legion to develop a formal engagement protocol with the state government to enable long-term, meaningful, and sustainable partnerships that would improve the welfare of veterans.

Governor Mbah further highlighted his administration’s ongoing aggressive development drive, noting that Enugu State is witnessing massive investments in agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“In a state where we are assembling over 800 tractors, building farm estates in every political ward, constructing 260 Smart Schools and 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, and expanding road infrastructure, I am confident that with a proper engagement framework, we can build partnerships that will be beneficial to veterans and the state as a whole,” he stated.

Earlier, the Deputy Commandant General and Enugu State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Dr. Emeka Norman Igwesi, commended Governor Mbah for consistently supporting both living veterans and families of fallen heroes, describing him as a leader who matches words with action.

“Your government has supported us and we are grateful. We are asking that you continue to do more, particularly through  policies and programmes that will enhance the welfare of military retirees, widows, and dependants of fallen heroes,” Igwesi said.

He regretted that many pledges made by individuals and organisations during Armed Forces Remembrance events often go unfulfilled, but singled out Governor Mbah as an exception, praising his credibility and commitment to good governance.

“Enugu State is fast becoming a modern state, and the veterans strongly support the governor for the remarkable work he is doing. Our members are disciplined, trained, and ready to serve,” he added.

He further appealed for support in areas such as provision of security vehicles, monthly subvention, scholarships for indigent children and orphans of fallen and living heroes, and empowerment programmes for widows of servicemen.

The event underscored the growing partnership between the Enugu State Government and the Nigerian Legion, culminating in the Legion’s recognition of Governor Peter Mbah as Best Governor in the World, a testament to his administration’s inclusive governance and respect for those who served the nation.
