Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of intense speculation about his political future.
The development was confirmed in a Facebook post on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, who disclosed that the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP lawmakers in the Assembly also resigned from the party.
Governor Diri reportedly made the announcement during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Yenagoa. Sources within the council hinted that members of the cabinet have equally tendered their resignation letters in solidarity with the governor.
Although Mr. Alabrah did not disclose the next political destination of the governor, the move has fueled fresh speculation about Diri’s possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Efforts to reach the Bayelsa PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, for comment were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered.
