Enugu, Nigeria - A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samson Chukwu Nnamani, has confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State, pledging to restore people-oriented governance and address what he described as worsening hardship among residents.
Speaking during a media briefing with journalists in Enugu, Nnamani, popularly known as ODERA said his decision to join the race was driven by the need to “rescue the people from unfriendly government policies” and reposition the state for inclusive development.
He decried what he termed excessive taxation on low-income earners without commensurate improvement in living conditions, stressing that governance must prioritise the welfare of the masses rather than serve as a platform for personal enrichment.
“Leadership should not be left in the hands of those who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of the people. I have been blessed in business, and I am coming to serve and uplift the people,” he said.
Nnamani described the current administration in Enugu State as insensitive to the plight of ordinary citizens, noting that his ambition is a direct response to the growing concerns and frustrations of the populace.
On zoning, the PDP stalwart reaffirmed his commitment to the existing political arrangement in the state. He stated that, if elected, he would complete the second tenure of the Enugu East Senatorial Zone and ensure a smooth power transition to Enugu West in 2031, in line with the state’s established rotational framework.
In a strong political statement, Nnamani also criticized the current state government elected under the PDP platform for allegedly abandoning the party after benefiting from its structure, warning that such actions undermine party cohesion and democratic values.
Nnamani commended key national leaders of the party, including Nyesom Wike, Samuel Anyanwu, and elder statesman Jim Nwobodo, for their roles in rebuilding and strengthening the PDP at the national level.
He also applauded the Enugu State chapter of the party under the leadership of Vitus Okechi for conducting peaceful and successful ward, local government, and state congresses, describing the process as a sign of renewed unity and internal democracy.
Positioning himself as a credible and experienced alternative, Nnamani assured party members and the electorate that his administration would focus on economic empowerment, social welfare, and transparent governance.
“With the support of the people and the PDP, we will build a government that listens, cares, and delivers real development,” he added.
Political observers say Nnamani’s entry into the 2027 race introduces a strong contender within the PDP, with his grassroots appeal and business background expected to resonate with voters seeking pragmatic leadership.
